When it comes to unconventionality in food, India aces it. And if you are an adventurous gourmet, there's one dish that has to be on your bucket, a rather unusual chutney called Chapda, which is made of red ants and their eggs and is a local delicacy in Bastar, Chhattisgarh. Chapda chutney is chutney made of red ant, which is deemed healthy and a food item that keeps diseases at bay. The tribal people have historically adapted and modified their lifestyles by the resources provided by the forest. Even their food preparation and customs reflect their living style. The people here cherish and are proud of the 'Chapda Chutney.' Hence, a depiction of the preparation of the chutney by a tribal is presented in the sculpture.
Dhokra making process has several steps:
- Making clay model
- Giving designs of bee-wax on dried clay
- Applying two layers of clay on wax design
- Creating channels for molten brass
The model is heated, then the inner layer of beeswax melts and escapes through the channels, consequently creating a space in between. This, therefore, acts as a mold. Next, hot liquid brass is poured into the mold through the channels. It is allowed to cool until the brass completely solidifies. Then the outer mud layer is broken to obtain a brass model.
