 Coshal Wrought Iron Sun Wall Hanging :-  Wrought iron, also known as "Pitwa art," is an ancient Bastar art form. In this case, the raw material is recycled iron. They turn the iron into beautiful masks, wall hangings, candle stands, and a variety of other useful items. This iron craft has been passed down through generations, and some artisans are still working on it. Bastar is the only place where the wrought iron craft is practiced.

Bastar tribes believe in folklore and worship their mother nature and the things that surround them. Bastar art depicts animals, trees, forests, and the sun because they believe they are their ancestors. This Pitwa art piece depicts tribals dancing in honor of the sun.

Crafting Technique

Wrought iron handicraft, also known as "Pitwa Art," is a centuries-old art form created by a small tribal community in Bastar, Chhattisgarh. They mostly use scrap or discarded iron pieces, cut them by hand with a chisel and hammer, and heat them with charcoal. Almost all of the human and animal figures are made from a single piece of sheet metal hammered by hand. Rivets are used to make a joint. No Welding machine, cutting machine, or mould is used to create an artefact, making it a true handicraft.

Meet The Artist

Tatiram Vishwakarma, a resident of the Kidei Chhepda in the Maoist-affected Kondagaon area of Chhattisgarh. Man renowned figure in the field of iron craft in the Bastar region of his state. Tatiram picked up the art of blacksmithing at the ripe old age of 14, thanks to his forefathers.
